This site is dedicated to the many aspects of food preservation, like canning, freeze-drying, and rotating your food storage. This recipe helps you expand your repertoire of meals that can be made with shelf-stable pantry ingredients and rotate those food storage items.Â
I recommend having the shelf-stable ingredients in this recipe as part of your long-term food storage pantry. The other fresh or frozen ingredients in this recipe, are common foods you likely have on hand, which makes this an easy recipe to prepare for dinner tonight.Â
How to Make This Recipe
1) Prep the Recipe Ingredients
- Turn the crockpot on and pre-measure the recipe ingredients. I prefer chicken thighs over chicken breasts but either works.
Note: You can cook this recipe on low or high. Cooking on high takes about half the time as cooking on low.
2) Add Chicken and Seasonings to Crockpot
- Spread 1 tablespoon of butter in the bottom of the crock-pot.
- Place the boneless skinless chicken in the slow cooker and sprinkle the Italian seasoning packet over the chicken.
- Drizzle 1 tablespoon of melted butter over the seasoned chicken.
- Cook on low for 4 hours or high for 2 hours.
3) Saute Onions and Make Soup Mixture
- In a skillet over medium heat, saute the chopped onions in 2 Tbsp butter until translucent. About 3 minutes.
- Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet: chicken broth (chicken stock), garlic powder, condensed cream of chicken soup, and cream cheese. Stir and simmer until well combined. Â
4) Add Soup Mixture to Crockpot and Finish Cooking
- Pour the chicken soup mixture over the cooked chicken in the slow cooker. Cook on low for an additional hour.
5) Serve and Enjoy
- Serve over hot steamed rice, egg noodles, or baked potato. Garnish with parsley. A nice compliment to this dish is a side dish of veggies.Â
- This dish also makes for yummy leftovers.
Rotating Canned Food Storage
Having long-term food storage has many benefits, including but not limited to the following:
- easy weeknight meals
- unexpected financial struggles
- save money by buying in bulk or on sale
- provides peace of mind in case of emergencies like natural disasters or unexpected events
- long-term food storage encourages meal planning and helps you maintain a well-rounded diet by having a variety of foods on hand
If you have long-term food storage, you need to rotate it to ensure food freshness.
This recipe, plus many others on this site, helps you rotate your long-term food storage.
